WHITE HAVEN, Pa- There’s more terrain to ski and surf, high tech snowmaking innovations, new terrain parks and dazzling features along with a major merger in the west and new ownership at a high elevation Pocono resort. It’s all in the cards for a brand new season of skiing and snowboarding in the mountains of Pennsylvania, less than a one-tank trip for snow sports enthusiasts in a 9 state region. Here’s what’s happening as we turn the winter calendar from 2013 to 14.
CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN RESORT celebrates a big anniversary this season as it moves into a half -century of snowsports adventure. To mark the 50 year milestone Camelback has launched a new winter website, www.SkiCamelback.com . The site is chock-full of handy information to make your day on the slopes seamless and exciting. In addition, Camelback will be launching the nation’s only snowtubing park website as this major Pocono Mountain resort takes the reigns as the Biggest Snowtubing Park in the USA with up to 42 lanes and 2 magic carpet lifts. Focusing efforts on becoming the Learn To Ski & Snowboard destination of the northeast, Camelback is utilizing Terrain Based Learning the newest shaped-snow terrain technology specifically for the beginner. Newly minted riders will have Mini-Pipes, Rollers, Banked Turns and a Perfect Pitch slope that will literally take the fear out of downhill sliding and bump up the fun and learning for every beginner. Kids cash in big at SHAWNEE MOUNTAIN this winter. RIDEbaby, a brand new snowboard program will get the 3 year old set on the snow, making those early moves to spark a lifetime of downhill excitement. RIDEbaby puts the tots on the hill for an easy-to-learn, 1 hour riding lesson. The fun rachets up for the youngest sliders with a newly designed WEErider Terrain Park . A gentle slope with small terrain park elements creates wide eyes as little kids learn they can do what the big kids are already doing. For the young at heart and adult of age, look for smoother cruising over more terrain, covered by enhanced automated snowmaking. This winter also sees the Shawnee rental equipment fleet taking flight with addition of nearly 1,000 new selections in ski, boards and boots. Over 4,000 visitors a day can be fitted in one of the ski world’s largest rental shops. The popular Pocono Mountain area is easy to reach via exit 309 off Interstate 80. BLUE MOUNTAIN racers get some enhanced terrain this winter with the widening of black diamond challenge on “Razorback.” The change-of-pace detour from double black “Razor’s Edge” will add some seamless versatility for skiers and riders who take their fun in the steep. Meanwhile Blue Mountain will be blowing bigger blizzards this season with additional state-of-the-art snow guns and an upgrade to the snow blowing arsenal on the fun producing, “Lazy Mile”, “Main Street” and “Razor’s Edge” slopes. Kids get a big boost at a new learning center. It will house the all-day Trailblazers program for youngsters from 4 to 12. The lofty peaks of ELK MOUNTAIN in Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountains take on a dramatically new and natural look with the planting of an additional 900 trees. Elk landscapers are deep into a trail blazing greenery program. Re-foresting has unleashed a natural vibrancy to challenging slopes and a scenic rejuvenation to broad cruising trails that meander for more than a mile and a half of exhilarating skiing and riding. The snowmaking system here has taken another leap forward to blanket Elk in a mantle of powder, generated by the latest tech tools in a snow farmer’s arsenal. MONTAGE MOUNTAIN is back. New operators have scrubbed the Sno Mountain name and reversed course to the original handle. With the name change came a boatload of new and improved features including LED lighting for better vision at night over the entire mountain. Skiers and riders will find a brand new rental and retail building along with a creative makeover in the base lodge. The bar and restaurant has been redesigned and newly built. There’s a food court and new guest services station. On the mountain, family friendly mini-tubing chutes have been added, and a pair of feature-rich terrain parks have been carved to magnetize riders from beginners to experts. The age of technology is bringing vivid imagery of sister ski-and-ride resorts JACK FROST and BIG BOULDER right into your home and on your smart phone. The exhilaration of bowl skiing will last longer this winter at LIBERTY MOUNTAIN. By relocating the A-Frame Chalet and trimming back the tree line, additional terrain is now available for skiers and riders who get their kicks traversing in the bowls. For that fireside warmth after cruising or bumping on the slopes, Liberty tucked a pair of fire pits at the Alpine Patio and on the backside of the mountain at South Pole. On the mountain, the resort has turned to technology for optimum snow production. More snow and powder puff quality will be blazing from the mountain’s continually evolving snowmaking system. Advanced skiers will have something to cheer about with the addition of high performance skis from Elan and Rossignol to the rental fleet.
