WHAT’S NEW THIS WINTER AT SEVEN SPRINGS MOUNTAIN RESORT?
SEVEN SPRINGS, Pa. — Seven Springs Mountain Resort, Pennsylvania’s premier four-season resort, is pleased to announce some exciting new projects and amenities for the approaching winter!
TOP ACCOLADES FOR TERRAIN PARKS
Seven Springs Mountain Resort once again received top honors for its dedication to and creativity in terrain park design. Pennsylvania’s largest resort has been selected as the East Coast’s number one terrain parks and number four halfpipe in North America by TransWorld SNOWboarding magazine. This marks the third consecutive year that the popular Laurel Highlands resort has been named in the national resort poll.
Yahoo! ranked Seven Springs as one of the Top Five Locations in the United States for a Snowboarding Vacation. Yahoo! cited the resort as “a great weekend destination for hardcore Eastern snowboarders. And the resort's hotel offers attractive packages and fine dining right there at the base of the slopes.” Aspen/Snowmass, Col.; Mammoth Mountain, Calif.; Breckenridge, Calif.; and Park City, Utah, also were included in the group.
THE FIRST-EVER URBAN TERRAIN PARK
Since 2004, Seven Springs has been committed to developing and growing its terrain parks, halfpipe and Superpipe. With six terrain parks of varying difficulty and progression and more than 70 features in all, Seven Springs will open the first-ever urban terrain park. The new park, presented by Forum Snowboards, will be called The Streets Urban Park at Seven Springs and will be located in the Foggy Bowl.
Inspired by the stash parks of NorthStar, Calif.; Killington, Vt. and Jackson Hole, Wy.; and the newest trends of freestyle skiing and snowboarding, The Streets will replicate a city landscape and provide endless possibilities of fun for freestyle skiers and snowboarders.
“We are super stoked to be building the first ever urban terrain park,” said Joel Rerko, Action Sports Director. “Having a park that caters specifically to urban-style riding will solidify Seven Springs’ position as a leader in the industry. We are psyched to be able to offer something so unique to our riders.”
Assisting the resort’s terrain park and mountain crew in the park’s creation will be Snow Park Technologies (SPT). A Seven Springs partner since 2006, SPT is the country’s leading consulting team for snow projects and their exceptional portfolio includes projects for Burton, ESPN Winter X Games, Winter Dew Tour, as well as some of the top resorts in the country.
Seven Springs and Burton, Forum’s parent company headquartered in Burlington, Vt., began a close partnership in 2009 with the introduction of the Burton Learn To Ride (LTR) program at the resort’s snowsports school.
EXPANDING TO AN OLYMPIC-SIZED HALFPIPE
This winter, the resort plans to expand the awe-inspiring Superpipe, located in the resort’s flagship terrain park, The Spot. The halfpipe’s 18-foot walls will be raised to 22-feet in height making it a regulation Olympic-sized halfpipe. When completed, Seven Springs’ halfpipe will be one of two of its size on the East Coast.
“The goal of the Superpipe has always been to provide a venue for competitions and become a training ground for the evolution of freestyle skiing and riding,” added Rerko.
On Feb. 4 and 5, 2012, for the first time ever, Seven Springs will host the Gatorade Free Flow Tour, the top amateur event in the country that offers the winners a chance to pre-qualify for the Dew Tour. Freestyle ski and snowboard halfpipe and slopestyle will be the main disciplines in this competition.
NEW BEGINNER AREA
Growing interest in snowsports and a need for another beginner’s skiing and snowboarding area led to the creation of a new instruction area, Easy Rider. The designated beginner area, located at the base of Stowe Slope, will help transition guests from the Beginner Bowl to conquering Green Circle runs like Fawn Lane and Phillip’s Run. Included in the new area is a state-of-the-art 180-foot Magic Carpet.
“Our team at Seven Springs is passionate about igniting excitement about snowsports.” said Iwan Fuchs, Director of Mountain Operations. “Ensuring that our students have a successful and fun lesson is our number one goal. The Easy Rider area is another example of our passion and dedication to the growth of skiing and riding.”
RENTAL CENTER REDESIGN AND PARTNERSHIP WITH ROSSIGNOL
During the summer, Seven Springs’ rental center received a complete overhaul and a new fleet of equipment. The new fleet will include 1,250 pairs of Rossignol skis and bindings and 2,500 pairs of Rossignol boots. Eight-hundred existing skis will receive new Rossignol bindings.
The resort teamed up with Rossignol to make both renting skis and learning to ski an easy, fun experience. The new skis feature the “Autoturn Rocker Technology,” which makes it easier to steer; easier to balance; and easier to control speed. This technology will help boost the confidence of beginner skiers and improve their control, thus providing a better skiing experience.
Also within the newly remodeled rental center will be the Rossignol Experience Center. The center’s concept is designed to make the rest of the resort experience as accessible, fun and fulfilling as the skis themselves. A new kids’ area will debut making even picking out their skis an engaging, fun part of the Seven Springs experience. The Burton Experience will also be featured, a personalized snowboard service with the Burton flair. Finally, a convenient retail shop has been added and will stock gloves, hats or even lip balm.
“Our commitment to providing the best equipment for our guests is second to none. From start to finish, the entire rental equipment process will be an easier and extraordinary experience,” said Chris Pelliccione, Rental Center Manager.
Four chairlifts were retrofitted for the 2011-12 season. Retrofitting is done to increase the speed of each. The speed of the North Pole lift will be increased to shave around 40 seconds off of the trip up. Cortina lift’s speed will be increased to save almost one minute less in travel time. The Tyrol lift, commonly used for ski race events will also have its speed increased. This means less time sitting on lifts, less time standing in line and more time skiing or riding on the slopes!
Also among the chairlifts that underwent retrofitting is the Blitzen chairlift. As it is the main mode of transport to The Spot terrain park and many trails, the Blitzen chairlift received a new drive station, bull wheel, gear box, auxiliary power unit and haul rope. It was also retrofitted for increased speed, saving 60-90 seconds in travel time.
