SEVEN SPRINGS, Pa. – On a rainy spring morning high atop the Laurel Highlands, 2,889 athletes from all over the East Coast and as far away as Arizona and Colorado took to the slopes of Seven Springs Mountain Resort. But they weren’t there to ski or snowboard. They came to get dirty at the resort’s adventure race, Mud on the Mountain.
The sixth event of its kind for the resort since May 2012, Mud on the Mountain served up 27 obstacles on 7.77 miles on grueling mountain terrain. Competitors hit the mountain in 15-minute intervals, beginning at 8 a.m. Each wave had a maximum of 200 people.
While Mud on the Mountain is about personal accomplishment, the first wave of participants was timed. The Elite Heat, as they are called, took to the slopes at 8 a.m. With a time of 1:11:04, the first place men’s division winner, Joey Hawley, 25, of North Huntingdon, crossed the finish line. First place in the women’s division was Katie Bordner, 39, of Carlisle, Pa., with a time of 1:41:35
